Packaging insulation materials with high thermal conductivity and excellent dielectric properties are favorable to meet the high demand and rapid development of third generation power semiconductors. In this study, we propose to improve the thermal conductivity of epoxy resin (EP) by incorporating a three-dimensional boron nitride thermally conductive network. Detailedly, polyurethane foam (PU) was used as a supporter, and boron nitride nanosheets (BNNSs) were loaded onto the PU supporter through chemical bonding (BNNS@PU). After immersing BNNS@PU into the EP resin, EP-based thermally conductive composites were prepared by vacuum-assisted impregnation. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope were used to characterize the chemical bonding and morphological structure of BNNS@PU, respectively. The content of BNNS in BNNS@PU/EP composites was quantitatively analyzed by TGA. The results show that the thermal conductivity of the BNNS@PU/EP composites reaches 0.521 W/m K with an enhancement rate η of 30.89 at an ultra-low BNNS filler content (5.93 wt. %). Additionally, the BNNS@PU/EP composites have excellent dielectric properties with the frequency range from 101 to 106 Hz. In order to prepare highly heat-resistant packaging insulation materials, in this paper, bismaleimide/epoxy resin (BMI/EP55) composites with different contents of BMI were prepared by melt blending BMI into amino tetrafunctional and phenolic epoxy resin (at a ratio of 5:5). The microstructures and thermal and electrical properties of the composites were tested. The electrostatic potential distribution, energy level distribution, and molecular orbitals of BMI were calculated using Gaussian. The results showed that the carbonyl group in BMI is highly electronegative, implying that the carbonyl group has a strong electron trapping ability. The thermal decomposition temperature of the composites gradually increased with the increase of BMI content, and the 20% BMI/EP55 composites had the highest heat-resistance index, along with a glass transition temperature (Tg) of >250 °C. At different test temperatures, with increase in the BMI content, the conductivity of epoxy resin composites showed a tendency to first decrease and then increase, the breakdown field strength showed a tendency to first increase and then decrease, and the dielectric constant was gradually decreased. Two trap centers were present simultaneously in the composites, where the shallow trap energy level is the deepest in 20% BMI/EP composites and the deep trap energy level is the deepest in 10% BMI/EP55 composites. Correspondingly, the 10% BMI/EP55 composite had a slower charge decay rate, while the 20% BMI/EP55 had a faster charge decay rate. In summary, the BMI/EP55 composites with high heat resistance and insulating properties were prepared in this study, which provided ideas for preparing high-temperature packaging insulating materials. DNA deformability and differential hydration are crucial determinants of biological processes ranging from genetic material packaging to gene expression; their associative details, however, remain inadequately understood. Herein, we report investigations of the dynamic and thermodynamic responses of the local hydration of a variety of base pair sequences. Leveraging in silico sampling and our in-house analyses, we first report the local conformational propensity of sequences that are either predisposed toward the canonical A- or B-conformations or are restrained to potential transitory pathways. It is observed that the transition from the unrestrained A-form to the B-form leads to lengthwise structural deformation. The insertion of intermittent -(CG)- base pairs in otherwise homogeneous -(AT)- sequences bears dynamical consequences for the vicinal hydration layer. Calculation of the excess (pair) entropy suggests substantially higher values of hydration water surrounding A conformations over the B- conformations. Applying the Rosenfeld approximation, we project that the diffusivity of water molecules proximal to canonical B conformation is least for the minor groove of the canonical B-conformation. We determine that structure, composition, and conformation specific groove dimension together influence the local hydration characteristics and, therefore, are expected to be important determinants of biological processes. Packaging waste makes up more than 10% of the landfilled waste in the United States. While consumers often want to make environmentally friendly product choices, we find that their perceptions of the environmental friendliness of product packaging may systematically deviate from its objective environmental friendliness. Eight studies (N = 4,103) document the perceived environmental friendliness (PEF) bias whereby consumers judge plastic packaging with additional paper to be more environmentally friendly than identical plastic packaging without the paper. The PEF bias is driven by consumers' "paper = good, plastic = bad" beliefs and by proportional reasoning, wherein packaging with a greater paper-to-plastic proportion is judged as more environmentally friendly. We further show that the PEF bias impacts consumers' willingness to pay and product choice. Importantly, this bias can be mitigated by a "minimal packaging sticker" intervention, which increases the environmental friendliness perceptions of plastic-only packaging, rendering plastic-packaged products to be preferable to their plastic-plus-paper-packaged counterparts. This research contributes to the packaging literature in marketing and to research on sustainability while offering practical implications for managers and public policy officials. Abstract Soursop (Annona muricata L.) fruit tea is a health‐beneficial product that promotes economic development and addresses the issue of excessive agricultural waste. Prolonging the shelf‐life of soursop fruit tea has been of scientific interest currently. This study evaluated the effects of three types of packaging materials of soursop fruit tea (e.g., paper, paper‐combined Polyetylen (PE), and aluminum‐combined PE) and different storage temperatures (5, 15, 30, and 45°C) on various product characteristics, total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), total ascorbic acid (TAA), and 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picryl hydrazyl (DPPH)/2,2′‐azino‐bis(3‐ethylbenzothiazoline‐6‐sulfonic acid) (ABTS) free radical scavenging capacity during 4 weeks of storage. The results revealed that the sample stored in aluminum‐combined PE packaging at 30°C retained most of the product's characteristics and nutritional values. This was evidenced by the moisture content of 2.49%, TAA of 3.9 ± 1.4 mg/100 g dry weight, TPC of 12.89 ± 0.47 mgGAE/g, TFC of 0.54 ± 0.004 mgQE/g, DPPH scavenging activity of 4.06 ± 0.02 mgAA/g, and ABTS scavenging activity of 13.34 ± 0.32 mgAA/g. Additionally, the microbiological quality of the sample met the standard of TCVN 9740:2013. Overall, the study highlights the importance of packaging materials and storage temperatures to maintain the nutritional quality of soursop fruit tea. It provides valuable insights into the suitable storage conditions for preserving the quality and health‐promoting effects of this product.

Superabsorbent bio-aerogels were developed from TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (isolated from vegetable lignocellulosic residues) and two different commercial chitosan reactants (low and high molecular weight) by polyelectrolyte complex formation at room temperature. The materials were designed with the aim to provide useful, bio-based, and environmentally friendly food packaging supplies able to successfully replace those currently used that are made of synthetic and non-biodegradable polymers. Three different thickness values were considered, and two different aging times were employed, thus leading to twelve different bio-aerogel samples. Remarkably, no crosslink agents nor organic solvents were used. The bio-aerogel's components were strongly interacting through hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions, leading to highly porous and stable materials able to absorb high amounts of water and soybean oil. Then, the specific tests to visualize the material's potential use as food absorbent pads showed the following: (i) they were able to absorb simulated food exudates under a specific pressure in higher quantities (≈4000%) than some commercial pads (≈1600%); (ii) the materials have low to moderate antibacterial activities exposing better reduction effectiveness for Listeria monocytogenes than for Salmonella typhimurium; and (iii) the antioxidant properties were in general low. In the light of all the results achieved, the bio-aerogels prepared from H-CH with an aging time of 24 h and whose thickness was around 2.1 mm (H-10g-24) were selected as the most appropriate for the desired application. In this study, for the first time, double-layer films based on furcellaran and gelatin were obtained, in which the 1st layer of furcellaran was enriched with various plant extracts. The aim of this work was to improve the composition of the developed innovative packaging material by using two layers of biopolymer complexes and analysing the composites to determine the effect of different model plant extracts on the physicochemical properties of the double-layered materials. Furthermore, the hypothesis that positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) could be correlated with gas barrier properties was verified. The addition of plant extracts significantly influenced the physicochemical parameters of the obtained double-layered materials. The lowest solubility was noted in films with the addition of garlic extract (58.40%) and black pepper extract (59.26%) which also had the lowest water content (8.88%). The film with garlic extract also had the lowest oxygen transfer rate (OTR) value after 6 months of storage which is consistent with PALS. The presented data suggest the possibility of correlating PALS results with the gas barrier properties. Tests carried out using this method will facilitate the selection of new potential ingredients when designing packaging materials based on biopolymers, thus, making it possible to obtain new-generation matrices. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to enhance the functional properties of Hessian fabric through resin finishing. Hessian bags made of lignocellulosic jute fiber are commonly used to pack, store and transport agro-commodities, including horticultural crops such as rice, potato, onion and wheat. However, because of high water affinity, these bags undergo degradation in properties due to moisture release by the stored commodities themselves. Exposure to natural elements, e.g. rain and dew, also causes moisture absorption in hessian bags. Once the bag gets moistened, degradation of jute bags starts due to microbial attack, leading to loss in tensile strength and change in extensibility, leading to ultimate breakage in warp and weft directions of the fabric. Design/methodology/approach: To overcome the degradation in the functional properties of hessian fabric due to exposure to moisture and microbial attack, the application of semi-synthetic polymeric materials was carried out. Findings: Tenacity, bursting strength, puncture resistance, tear strength and breaking load, as well as life cycle of resin-treated jute fabric was found to be better than control jute. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, no recent reports of resin finishing on jute (hessian) fabric with semi-synthetic resins are presently available, other than coating with rubber. The present study evaluated, through physical and physiological tests, the seed quality of a landrace fava bean variety in different packaging materials and storage periods, aiming to guarantee the conservation of their quality in seed banks and facilities. The methodology used was the one recommended by the Rules for Seed Analysis (RAS - Brasil, 2009) and minimum descriptors for Phaseolus lunatus L. The data were subjected to analysis of variance by the F-test at 5% signififance to verify the presence of significant interactions and the individual effects of each treatment. The test of multiple comparison of means was performed by the Tukey test at 5% significance between common treatments. The Dunnett test was used at 5% significance to compare the control means with the means of the treatments. R egression analysis was performed to study the effect of storage on the variables evaluated. All analyses were performed using the R software. From the results, it can be concluded that the storage of fava bean seeds is viable in small rural properties in impermeable packaging materials and aluminized polyethylene bags. The germination and vigor of the seeds analyzed in this study decreased throughout the storage period regardless of the type of packaging used. It is not recommended to store fava bean seeds in permeable paper packaging as they have the lowest quality indices (germination and vigor) at the end of the storage period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synthetic plastic is the most anxious polymer in packing industry due to its non-biodegradability and biogeomagnification in the ecosystem. In light of the growing worldwide concern over synthetic polymers, natural and semi-synthetic biodegradable packaging materials with microbicide properties are receiving more attention in the food industry. The current research emphasises on the idea to convert a waste aquatic weed in to an advantageous eco-friendly substitute to a harmful biomagnifying food packing material. Water weed Eichhornia crassipes was used for the formation of hybrid films with nanocellulose and nanoclay coupled with green synthesised zinc oxide nanoparticles (NPs) by C. fistula fruit extract. Physicochemical properties of the starch-based binary nanocomposite (BNC) as well as ternary nanocomposite (TNC) were confirmed by TGA, DSC, SEM, EDX, FTIR and XRD analyses. The mechanical properties of both BNC and TNC were evaluated for its tensile strength, Young's modulus and elongation break analysis. Further, the established ternary nanocomposite film with 2% ZnO NPs showed better surface morphology compared to the control binary films. Microbial efficacy studies revealed that the synthesised films are microbicidal in nature against foodborne pathogens Escherichia coli, Botrytis cinerea and Sclerotium rolfsii. The overall study accentuates that the green-based nanocomposites are eco-friendly, economically feasible and act as an effective route to overcome foodborne pathogens conferring them to be an alternative to petrochemical-based product. Composite polymer materials featured superior thermal conductivity, flame retardancy, and electromagnetic shielding performance are increasingly in demand due to the rapid development of highly miniaturized, portable, and flexible electronic devices. Herein, a facile and green ball milling shear method is utilized for generating MXene@Boron nitride (MXene@BN). The multi‐functional fillers (MXene@BN) are constructed and incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to prepare a multifunctional composite (PDMS/MXene@BN) for achieving improved electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding performance and thermal conductivity as well as flame retardancy simultaneously. When the PDMS/MXene@BN composite has a MXene@BN loading of 2.4 wt.%, it exhibits a high thermal conductivity of 0.59 W m−1K−1, which is 210% higher than that of the pure PDMS matrix. This is attributed to its unique chestnut‐like double‐layer structure. With a smoke production rate (SPR) of 0.04 m2 s−1 and total smoke production (TSP) of 3.51 m2, PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 composite exhibits superb smoke suppression properties. These SPR and TSP values are 63.20% and 63.50% lower than the corresponding values of pure PDMS. Moreover, the EMI SE of the PDMS/MXene@BN 2.4 can reach 26.3 dB at 8.5 GHz. Nanotechnology is being used to create innovative food packaging systems that can inhibit the oxidation of foods, thereby improving their quality, safety, and shelf life. These nano-enabled antioxidant packaging materials may therefore increase the healthiness and sustainability of the food supply chain. Recent progress in the application of nanotechnology to create antioxidant packaging materials is reviewed in this paper. The utilization of nanoparticles, nanofibers, nanocrystals, and nanoemulsions to incorporate antioxidants into these packaging materials is highlighted. The application of nano-enabled antioxidant packaging materials to preserve meat, seafood, fruit, vegetable, and other foods is then discussed. Finally, future directions and challenges in the development of this kind of active packaging material are highlighted to stimulate new areas of future research. Nanotechnology has already been used to create antioxidant packaging materials that inhibit oxidative deterioration reactions in foods, thereby prolonging their shelf life and reducing food waste. Epoxy resin (EP) is a promising material that exhibits great potential in the fields of packaging and adhesion. However, reducing its brittleness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) at low filler content is still a challenge. To address this problem, three types of MWCNTs nanofluids (MWCNTs NFs) with different shell structures were designed to modify epoxy resin. With the addition of 1 wt% MWCNTs‐M1, the compression, impact, and lap shear strength of the composites increased to 88.97 MPa, 81.39 kJ/m2, 12.69 MPa, respectively, which are 21.7%, 66.1%, and 58.0% higher than pure epoxy. Meanwhile, incorporating MWCNTs NFs also improved the CTE and thermal conductivity, with a 19.7% decrease in CTE and a 40% improvement in thermal conductivity at 2 wt% NFs content. Particularly, the effect of MWCNTs NFs structure on the composite properties was explored, which can be an available reference for designing specific NFs epoxy composites. In recent years, the presence and migration of PAEs in packaging materials and consumer products has become a serious concern. Based on this concern, the aim of our study is to determine the possible migration potential and speed of PAEs in benthic fish stored in vacuum packaging, as well as to monitor the storage time and type as well as polyethylene (PE) polymer detection.As a result of the analysis performed by µ-Raman spectroscopy, 1 microplastic (MP) of 6 µm in size was determined on the 30th day of storage in whiting fish muscle and the polymer type was found to be Polyethylene (PE) (low density polyethylene: LDPE). Depending on the storage time of the packaging used in the vacuum packaging process, it has been determined that its chemical composition is affected by temperature and different types of polymers are formed. 10 types of PAEs were identified in the packaging material and stored flesh fish: DIBP, DBP, DPENP, DHEXP, BBP, DEHP, DCHP, DNOP, DINP and DDP. While the most dominant PAEs in the packaging material were determined as DEHP, the most dominant PAEs in fish meat were recorded as BBP and the lowest as DMP. The findings provide a motivating model for monitoring the presence and migration of PAEs in foods, while filling an important gap in maintaining a safe food chain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two types of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were isolated from cotton linter fibers and hardwood fibers through mechanical fibrillation methods. The dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils (DACNFs) were prepared through the periodate oxidation method, and their morphological and structural properties were investigated. The characteristics of the DACNFs during the concentration process were also explored. The AFM analysis results showed that the mean diameters of wood fiber-based CNFs and cotton fiber-based CNFs were about 52.03 nm and 69.51 nm, respectively. However, the periodate oxidation treatment process obviously reduced the nanofibril size and destroyed the crystalline region of the nanofibrils. Due to the high crystallinity of cotton fibers, the cotton fiber-based DACNFs exhibited a lower aldehyde content and suspension stability compared to the wood fiber-based DACNFs. For the concentration process of the DACNF suspension, the bound water content of the concentrated cotton fiber-based DACNFs was lowered to 0.41 g/g, which indicated that the cotton fiber-based DACNFs could have good redispersibility. Both the wood fiber-based and cotton fiber-based DACNF films showed relatively good transmittance and mechanical strength. In addition, to the cotton fiber-based DACNF films had a very low swelling ratio, and the barrier water vapor and oxygen properties of the redispersed cotton fiber-based DACNF films decreased by very little. In sum, this study has demonstrated that cotton fibers could serve as an effective alternative to wood fibers for preparing CNFs, and that cotton fiber-based DACNFs have huge application prospects in the field of packaging film materials due to their stable properties during the concentration process. Steviosides extracted from the leaves of the plant Stevia rebaudiana are increasingly used in the food industry as natural low-calorie sweeteners. Phthalates in food are often assumed to arise from food containers or packaging materials. Here, experiments were carried out to identify the potential sources of DMP, DBP, DIBP, and DEHP in the leaves of stevioside through investigation of their content in native stevioside tissues, soils, and associated agronomic materials. The results show that phthalate contamination was present in all the samples tested, and the influence of regional factors at the provincial level on the content of plasticizers in stevia leaves was not significant. Phthalates in stevia leaves can be absorbed into the plant body through leaves and roots. Using resin removal, the phthalate content in stevioside glycosides was reduced to less than 0.05 ppm, and some indicators were far lower than the limit standard in EU food. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Packaging plays a critical role in determining the quality, safety, and shelf-life of many food products. There have been several innovations in the development of more effective food packaging materials recently. Polymer nanofibers are finding increasing attention as additives in packaging materials because of their ability to control their pore size, surface energy, barrier properties, antimicrobial activity, and mechanical strength. Electrospinning is a widely used processing method for fabricating nanofibers from food grade polymers. This review describes recent advances in the development of electrospun nanofibers for application in active and smart packaging materials. Moreover, it highlights the impact of these nanofibers on the physicochemical properties of packaging materials, as well as the application of nanofiber-loaded packaging materials to foods, such as dairy, meat, fruit, and vegetable products. Electrospinning is a flexible method for smart and active packaging fabrication. Nanofibers can improve mechanical, barrier, and optical properties of packaging. Electrospun fibers can control the release of functional agents to food products. Incorporation of additives in nanofibers makes respond to environmental changes. This paper presents the demonstration of underwater thermoacoustic (TA) sound generation using three-dimensional graphene (3D-C). 3D-C is able to interface with water as the immediate acoustic medium, resulting in reduced attenuation across solid packaging encapsulation due to favorable acoustic impedance matching. This is shown using array configurations of 2*2 and 4*4 individual 3D-C elements prepared onto printed circuit boards and secured within a watertight cuboid Delrin container with deionized water. Comparisons of underwater acoustic performance between internal medium of water and air shows significant improvement in measured sound pressure level (SPL) with internal water medium, in contrast with internal air medium where SPL were below noise floor. This demonstration opens up new possibilities of 3D-C for underwater acoustic applications. Simulations are conducted using 3D finite element model generated with COMSOL Multiphysics and validated with experimental results. A revised formulation of transmission voltage response (TVR) specific to TA sound generation is proposed due to the difference in power scaling of TA sound generation and subsequently validated using simulation. There is a robust industrial drive for resolving the issues related to packaging materials for contributing a pivotal essence towards circular economy via their recycling. Nanotechnology is one of them, which is able to contribute and develop a prime impact on both quantitative and qualitative manufacturing of safe and effective foods/food components (perishable or semi-perishable) with a pragmatic assessment of enhanced shelf life. In this review, a brief overview was perceived on nanocomposite materials towards food packaging. Numerous polymeric/metallic nanocomposite systems (natural and synthetic) were explored for their migration issues; antioxidant, antimicrobial, and barrier properties; recyclability; consumer acceptability; toxicity; and regulatory aspects. The discussion was also extended with some recent trends and future perspectives of cutting-edge nanomaterials (nanosensors) in smart food processing, packaging, security, storage, quality evaluation of preserved foods, and the methods arrayed for assessing the nanomaterial impact over the biological systems. Summary: This study investigates the potential of marination in extending the shelf life of vacuum‐packed croaker fish (Otolithes cuvieri, Trewavas, 1974) steaks by evaluating their organoleptic, biochemical and microbiological characteristics under chilled storage conditions (4 ± 1 °C) for 21 days. The marination process involves the use of natural preservatives such as salt, vinegar and spices, aiming to enhance flavour and texture. Results demonstrated that marination effectively reduces the rate of increase in total plate count (TPC), trimethylamine nitrogen (TMA‐N), total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB‐N), pH, peroxide value (PV) and free fatty acids (FFA) during storage, thereby extending the shelf life of the tested samples. Control (C) and marinated (M) samples of vacuum‐packed fish steaks remained organoleptically acceptable until the 9th and 15th days of chilled storage respectively. Due to the addition of marinating ingredients, significant changes were observed in taste, texture and proximate content. The maximum extension in shelf life for marinated samples is attributed to the combined antimicrobial and antioxidative effects of the different ingredients used in the marination process. These findings suggest that marination holds promise as a method for preserving fish products and satisfying consumer preferences for flavourful, ready‐to‐cook and economically viable seafood options. Summary: Recently, the assimilation of pH‐sensitive natural pigments into biopolymers has shown promising prospects for pH‐reactive based smart packaging material. Unlike synthetic pigments, which have potential safety problems due to migration, natural pigments have negligible toxicity levels both to humans and the environment and some even possess nutritional and pharmacological properties. To complement the advantages of natural pigments, natural biopolymers have proven to be ideal candidates for the development of smart packaging because of their biocompatibility, availability, biodegradability, stability, minimum toxicity and good film‐forming capability. Smart packaging gives consumers real‐time signals on the quality of packaged food via food deterioration indicators like pH alteration. This review will consider the recent progress in the development of pH‐responsive smart packaging based on natural pH‐sensitive pigments and natural biopolymers from 2013 to the present. Summary: The effects of Cinnamomum zeylanicum extract (CZE) at different rations (0%, 1%, 3% and 5%) on gelatin (GL)–polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) blend films were evaluated in relation to the structural, tensile strength, physical, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the films in this study. The results showed that water barriers of the film samples decreased, but the UV‐blocking property increased and became opaque at the highest GLPVA5 film. The tensile strengths of GLPVA, GLPVA1, GLPVA3 and GLPVA5 films were 1.21, 1.78, 1.62 and 1.95 MPa, respectively. The antimicrobial effect of these films was determined against Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella typhimurium and Bacillus cereus according to the parallel stick method. Antioxidant properties of cinnamon extract were investigated using 2,2‐diphenyl‐1‐picryl‐hydrazil (DPPH) methods. The % inhibition of DPPH was found to be 82.00. No antibacterial effect was detected for B.cereus and E. faecalis at 0%, 1%, 3% and 5%. While no activity was observed in 0%, 1% and 3% cinnamon, 7.5 and 3.0 mm zones were detected in S. typhimirium and E. coli, respectively, in 5% cinnamon. Plant protection products are commercially available both in solid form and liquid formulation solutions. In Portugal, the volume of pesticides sold in 2019 translates into almost 800 tons of packaging material. Most of these materials are plastic containers, the remainder being mainly cardboard, mixed materials and metal. After use, the containers may still have relatively high amounts of toxic pesticides, which render them hazardous. The triple rinsing practice has been highly suggested to reduce the amount of pesticides in the empty containers, in order to allow further recycling. In Portugal there is an ongoing campaign to encourage the triple rinsing, aiming to make this type of waste non-hazardous. Thus, a way to monitor the concentration of leftover pesticides in the containers is necessary. This work describes the development of a methodology for the determination of 32 pesticides in used containers, and a monitoring campaign carried out between April 2018 and February 2021. The method involves grinding the material to a small particle size (<0.5 mm), followed by ultrasound-assisted liquid extraction with a tetrahydrofuran solution and analysis by GC/TOFMS and HPLC/DAD. The recoveries obtained were between 71–116% for all compounds except captan (62%), triclopyr (40%) and mesotrione (32%). The limits of detection and quantification were between 2.6–53.6 mg/kg for GC/TOFMS and 8.1–162.5 mg/kg for HPLC/DAD. The first three collections of containers (containing several materials from plastic to metal) showed high values for the sum of all analytes (1661 to 4332 mg/kg), whereas the last five collections (only plastic materials) presented a lower content (180 to 521 mg/kg), which reflects the effectiveness of the campaign promoting the triple rinsing practice of plastic containers. There are several physical and chemical methods for synthesizing nanomaterials, while the most appropriate techniques involve using green chemistry and eco-friendly material. Recently, green synthesized materials for different applications have gained attention as a result of their environmental friendliness and cost-effectiveness. Applying green synthesized nanoparticles (NPS) in food packaging has been extensively investigated. Biopolymers require filler to enhance the optical, barrier, thermal, antimicrobial, and mechanical properties of packaging. Biopolymer packaging incorporated with green synthesized NPs is expected to simultaneously enhance performance while reducing environmental damage. The current review article focuses on biopolymer films with bio (green)-synthesized nanomaterials and their effectiveness in reducing the negative environmental implications of synthetic packaging. It also covers the general concepts of green synthesis of NPs, their production methods, their performance, and characterization, and discusses the potential, performance and recent developments of bio-nanocomposite films/coatings in biodegradable food packaging. Biological and green synthesis of nanomaterial is a superior choice over chemical and physical methods due to nanoscale attributes implanted in a green chemistry matrix, have sparked a lot of interest for their potential uses in a variety of sectors. This research investigates the growing relevance of nanocomposites manufactured using ecologically friendly, green technologies. The transition to green synthesis correlates with the worldwide drive for environmentally sound procedures, limiting the use of traditional harsh synthetic techniques. Herein, manganese was decorated on ZnO NPs via reducing agent of Withania-extract and confirmed by UV-spectrophotometry with highest peak at 1:2 ratio precursors, and having lower bandgap energy (3.3 eV). XRD showed the sharp peaks and confirms the formation of nanoparticles, having particle size in range of 11–14 nm. SEM confirmed amorphous tetragonal structure while EDX spectroscopy showed the presence of Zn and Mn in all composition. Green synthesized Mn-decorated ZnO-NPs screened against bacterial strains and exhibited excellent antimicrobial activities against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. To check further, applicability of synthesized Mn-decorated Zn nanocomposites, their photocatalytic activity against toxic water pollutants (methylene blue (MB) dye) were also investigated and results showed that 53.8% degradation of MB was done successfully. Furthermore, the installation of green chemistry in synthesizing nanocomposites by using plant extract matrix optimizes antibacterial characteristics, antioxidant and biodegradability, helping to build sustainable green Mn decorated ZnO nanomaterial. This work, explains how biologically friendly Mn-doped ZnO nanocomposites can help reduce the environmental impact of traditional packaging materials. Based on these findings, it was determined that nanocomposites derived from biological resources should be produced on a wide scale to eradicate environmental and water contaminants through degradation. Highlights The biodegradable materials for the packaging sector have attracted much attention as they can effectively reduce the reliance on fossil fuel products. The introduction of two‐dimensional layered fillers is readily available for packaging materials to minimize costs while enhancing performance. However, few studies have investigated the molecular structure changes of OMMT to further modulate the comprehensive performance of polyhydroxy butyrate (PHB) materials. To fill this gap, we innovatively modified the surfactant's structure to regulate the embedding and dispersion of montmorillonite (OMMT) and interfacial bonding with the substrate, thus further examining the material's antibacterial and degrading properties and discussing mechanisms for the first time. The prepared C18M7@PHB materials present enhanced tensile strength (180%) and high thermal stability, excellent antimicrobial properties compared to the unmodified one. Both the water vapor and oxygen permeabilities of composites have decreased by 87% and 55%, respectively. Moreover, it is found that the composites exhibit various degradation cycles mainly depending on active agent chain length. This work lays a solid foundation for multifunctional packaging materials based on fillers with two‐dimensional layered structures. Determining the ideal film's bulk ratio and active agent structure. The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is restricted by the susceptibility of fresh produce to deterioration caused by postharvest physiological and metabolic activities. Developing efficient preservation strategies is thus among the most important scientific issues to be urgently addressed in the field of food science. The incorporation of active agents into a polymer matrix to prepare biodegradable active packaging is being increasingly explored to mitigate the postharvest spoilage of fruits and vegetables during storage. This paper reviews the composition of biodegradable polymers and the methods used to prepare biodegradable active packaging. In addition, the interactions between bioactive ingredients and biodegradable polymers that can lead to plasticizing or cross-linking effects are summarized. Furthermore, the applications of biodegradable active (i.e., antibacterial, antioxidant, ethylene removing, barrier, and modified atmosphere) packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are illustrated. These films may increase sensory acceptability, improve quality, and prolong the shelf life of postharvest products. Finally, the challenges and trends of biodegradable active packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are discussed. The aim of the study was to produce dual nanofibers (NFs) with antibacterial and antioxidant properties, and to determine the potential use of dual NFs in food preservation. For this purpose, Polycaprolactone (PCL) polymers and Hydroxypropyl Beta Cyclodextrin (HPβ‐CD) polymer were used to produce nanofibers. Nisin, which is in the GRAS class, was used for the antibacterial properties of NFs and black seed cumin oil (BCSO) was used for antibacterial and antioxidant effects. PCL_BCSO‐NFs has an antimicrobial effect on both Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria. Furthermore, PCL_BCSO‐NFs showed antibacterial activity of 50 % and above after long periods of storage at the room temperature. Nisin loaded HPβ‐CD‐NF and dual layer nanofiber exhibited antibacterial activity of 3.5±0.3 cm and 3.1±0.3 cm zone diameter against S. aureus and E. coli respectively. Furthermore, PCL/BCSO‐HPβ_CD/Nisin‐NFs showed a high antimicrobial effect until day 60. Antioxidant activity of PCL_BCSO‐NFs was 63.2 % while 52.9 % was observed by dual layer NFs. In addition, the antioxidant activity of PCL/BCSO‐HPβ_CD/Nisin‐NFs ranged from 52 to 70 % for 1d and 7 days storage period. Premise: During the COVID‐19 pandemic lockdown, all laboratory work was suspended, and we were obliged to work from home, causing delays in our research. As the disruption to supply chains made it difficult to obtain our regular lab supplies, we were obliged to search for substitutes. We became familiar with a plastic material known as biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) that is widely used in the food industry for wrapping or storing fruits, vegetables, and meat. BOPP is easily dissolved in organic solvents such as xylenes, acetone, or thinner, but these reagents are very toxic, flammable, and can cause nausea in some users. After testing several alternatives, we found a polyurethane remover that proved to be an effective and relatively harmless BOPP solvent. Methods and Results: By dissolving thin slices of BOPP in a polyurethane solvent, we obtained a clean fluid that we used to obtain leaf surface prints that could be mounted on microscope slides with a coverslip. This fluid produced excellent bark and wood sections and can be used to obtain wood or charcoal surface prints. Our attempts to use it as a mounting medium were unsuccessful. Conclusions: BOPP dissolved in a polyurethane remover is a handy, versatile resource for plant microtechniques. Fruit and vegetable processing byproducts have a high concentration of biologically useful components and nutritional fibre, though they are frequently discarded as manufacturing waste. The purpose of this study was to improve the nutritional value of the Indian recipe papad, a low-moisture dish with a thin, crisp, wafer-like texture, by utilizing the beneficial properties of dehydrated carrot pomace powder (CPP), which is usually discarded as a food industry bio-waste. Carrot pomace powder was prepared and examined for nutritional and functional properties (10, 20, and 30%), and the developed samples were coded as P0 (control, 100% black gram flour), P1 (black gram flour: carrot pomace powder; 90:10), P2 (black gram flour: carrot pomace powder; 80:20), and P3 (black gram flour: carrot pomace powder; 70:30). The physical, sensory, and storage properties of the developed value-added papads were evaluated. Adding CPP to the flour mix increased the moisture, ash, and crude fiber content while decreasing the protein and carbohydrate content. Based on sensory evaluation, sample P1 was found to be the most acceptable by the sensory panel. The product's microbiological studies showed that, up to a 30-day storage period, the product was well within safe limits. Based on the water activity (at 36.7°C/83% RH) and overall acceptability scores, triple-laminated aluminum bags were considered an appropriate packaging material for storing the value-added papads. Growing environmental concerns and consumer demand for safe food lead to the innovation of biodegradable and active packaging materials. In this work, a biodegradable and active bilayer nanocomposite (TPS‐Y/NP) from two cassava starch‐based film layers is developed by casting, for possible use as packaging that can extend food shelf life. One layer is composed of a starch‐yerba mate extract film (TPS‐Y) and the other of a starch‐titanium dioxide nanoparticles nanocomposite (TPS‐NP). The use of the same starch matrix (TPS) in both films achieves a material with excellent interlayer compatibility. The bilayer presents activity against different pathogens and improvements in mechanical resistance and water vapor permeability (WVP) due to the contribution of the nanocomposite layer, and it shows antioxidant activity and greater deformation due to the layer with the natural extract. In addition, all films degrade in vegetable compost almost completely in two weeks. This bilayer film can be promisingly employed as a biodegradable and functional packaging to improve the useful life of food by conferring antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Environmental pollution caused by plastic is a present problem. Polystyrene is a widely used packaging material (e.g., Styrofoam) that can be broken down into microplastics through abrasion. Once the plastic is released into the environment, it is dispersed by wind and atmospheric dust. In this study, we investigated the uptake of polystyrene particles into human cells using A549 cells as a model of the alveolar epithelial barrier, CaCo-2 cells as a model of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and THP-1 cells as a model of immune cells to simulate a possible uptake of microplastics by inhalation, oral uptake, and interaction with the cellular immune system, respectively. The uptake of fluorescence-labeled beads by the different cell types was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy in a semi-quantitative, concentration-dependent manner. Additionally, we used Raman spectroscopy as a complementary method for label-free qualitative detection and the visualization of polystyrene within cells. The uptake of polystyrene beads by all investigated cell types was detected, while the uptake behavior of professional phagocytes (THP-1) differed from that of adherent epithelial cells. At a time when food safety awareness is increasing, attention is paid not only to food and additives but also to packaging materials. Most current food packaging is usually made of traditional petroleum-based polymeric materials, which are not biodegradable and have adverse effects on the environment and health. In this context, the development of new non-toxic and biodegradable materials for extending the best-before date of food is receiving increasing attention. In addition, additives in packaging materials may migrate outward, resulting in contact with food. For this reason, additives are also seen as a transition from synthetic additives to natural extracts. Active extracts from animals and plants having good antioxidant and antibacterial properties are also beneficial for human health. It is indisputable that active extracts are ideal substitutes for synthetic additives. Polymer packaging materials combined with active extracts not only maintain their original mechanical and optical properties and thermal stability but also endow polymers with new functions to extend the shelf life of food. This review paper provides an overview of this promising natural extract-containing polymer-based active packaging, with a focus on plant essential oils (containing phenolics, monoterpenes, terpene alcohols, terpene ketones, and aldehydes), pigments (procyanidins), vitamins (vitamin B), and peptides (nisin). In particular, this paper covers the research progress of such active extracts, in single or compound forms, combined with diverse polymers (mostly biopolymers) for food packaging applications with particular focus on the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of packaging materials. There is an ever-increasing demand for renewable, recyclable and biodegradable packaging solutions, from consumers, producers of goods, and producers of packaging materials. Closing the material loop and increasing recyclability of fiber-based package materials is one of the keys to move forward towards a more sustainable future. While the recyclability rates of fiber-based packaging are high, packaging boards with high wet-strength can pose problems due to problems with repulping. This manuscript investigated the possibilities to reduce the use of polyamide-epichlorohydrin resins (PAE) by supporting the process system with carboxy-methylated cellulose (CMC) through machine trials in mill scale production. The focus of the investigation was on the wet-strength of the board product and the repulpability value. The results given from the full-scale trial were positive, indicating a potential in using CMC while reducing the PAE addition. The results showed that wet tear strength and wet tensile strength of the board were maintained, while higher repulpability rates were given, encouraging better recyclability of the board material. Due to the increasing demands of consumers from the food packaging, it enabled the improve of active packaging practices. Antimicrobial and antifungal coatings or films are an active packaging application. In such packaging materials, natural or synthetic antimicrobial material is added to the film or coating to help the packaging protect food. The use of biofilms produced from biopolymers in food packaging is more suitable than polymers with many damages such as PET, PE. Film production of many biopolymers such as cellulose derivatives, chitosan, PVA, starch PLA can be realized. Pelargonium graveolens plant is a natural source with strong antifungal and antimicrobial properties. For the reasons explained above, the experimental study aims to manufacture printable film with antimicrobial properties which is used in active packaging, using cellulose butyrate acetate and Pelargonium graveolens essential oil. For this purpose, cellulose butyrate acetate bio films, having variative ratios (0.1, 2.5, 5, 10 %) of Pelargonium graveolens oil, were produced with spin coating method. The transparency of prepared five different films were defined by UV–vis. spectroscopy. The antimicrobial properties of the produced films were measured against gram positive and negative bacteria. All produced biofilms were printed. The printability parameters of biofilms, (color, gloss) were determined. Consequently, cellulose butyrate acetate films loaded with Pelargonium graveolens oil were successfully produced. It is concluded that obtained all biofilms are with no color, transparent and printable with oil based inks. It was determined that the quantity Pelargonium graveolens oil raised in the biofilms had a strong inhibitory effect against gram positive and negative bacteria. The global economy growth requires a sustainable management of agro-industrials and by-products, as they represent a source of bioactive compounds (BCs) (such as antioxidants and carbohydrates) with relevant biotechnological and nutritional value. Their use is potentially applicable to different fields, as it can provide an added value to food products, such as shelf-life improvement. Moreover, according to the "Zero" principles, the residual matrices can be also employed to obtain innovative and eco-friendly bio-composite materials. The review gives an overview of the different uses of extracts derived from renewable sources and proposed as food ingredients for the development of new functional foods with improved oxidative stability. It also focuses on the exploitation of by-products in the field of packaging, showing applications regarding the formulations of active films, and their use as fillers for the development of innovative materials. This study deals with removing crude oil droplets from colloidal oil in water emulsions. The target was the development of efficient adsorbents for the tertiary treatment of industrial-produced water (PW). The novel adsorbent was designed from recycled low-density polyethylene (LDPE) powder grafted by the cationic polymer. The cationic polymer was synthesized directly on the LDPE surface by plasma-induced radical polymerization. A positively charged adsorbent was chosen due to the negative character of oily droplets to enhance separation efficiency in treating oil-water emulsions. The separation was performed in both batch and filtration modes. Absorption/adsorption uptake capacities showed a sigmoidal S-shape that was analyzed using the Sips model and compared with the newly developed empirical model. Both models showed a remarkable coincidence in the description of experimental data. The separation efficiency of the novel adsorbent was also tested in a filtration mode mimicking a commonly used deep-bed filtration technology. The comparison of the separation efficiency for various sorbents indicated a supreme performance of novel adsorbent. This study demonstrates the potential of a relatively cheap, prepared commodity-based adsorbent for the purification of emulsified oily polluted water in both batch and filtration configurations. This study also contributes to the recycling of polyethylene waste because LDPE attracts meager interest in recycled LLDPE due to many obstacles to reusing LDPE waste for its reprocessing as packaging materials. Summary: The development of new packaging materials with biodegradability is gaining more importance nowadays. The packaging materials produced using cellulose can reduce the environmental pollution caused by synthetic polymers. The nanocellulose was extracted from the Borassus flabellifer husk by combining TEMPO (2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine 1‐oxyl radical)‐mediated oxidation and ultrasonication. The packaging film was developed by the combination of arrowroot starch (5 g), glycerol (2 g), nanocellulose suspension (5%) and neem oil (1 mL) using the solution casting technique. The film was then analysed for different properties, including tensile strength, contact angle measurement, antioxidant properties and antimicrobial properties. The active packaging film showed improved mechanical, antimicrobial and optical properties than the normal starch film. The application study of the active films showed that the chicken meat packed in pure starch films spoiled faster with greater changes in pH, weight loss and hardness than the chicken packed in active films. The incorporation of neem oil in the film prevented the lipid oxidation of chicken meat due to the antioxidant activity of phenolic compounds present in neem oil and resulted in lower peroxide values. The die shear test is a feasible and conventional method to characterize the shear strength of die‐attaching layer materials in electronic packaging. A new method for determining cohesive zone model (CZM) parameters using deep neural networks (DNN) and die shear tests is proposed, different from classical fracture framework or lap shear test‐based methods. With the sintered nano‐silver die shear test, the results show that the bilinear CZM inversion results agree well with the experimental results. It is found that the DNN model has high accuracy in predicting and identifying the maximum shear traction strength τmax, separation displacement of the interface δf, and the interface stiffness k1 of CZM parameters for sintered nano‐silver adhesive layer through die shear test load versus displacement curves. The presented DNN‐aided inverse identifying method through the die shear test in this paper could provide an alternative and convenient method for extracting CZM parameters of various kinds of adhesive materials in electronic packaging.
